- 1) before planting, outside temperature needs to be at a minimum of 45°F at night and 70°F in daytime, 2) choose a location with well-drained soil loosen soil prior to planting, 3) dig a hole in loosened soil 2 to 4 times the size of the bulb (about 6 in. deep) place bulb with the blunt side facing down and any sprouts facing up, 4) plant elephant ear bulbs so the top of the bulb is about 1-2 in below the soil surface and each bulb about 12-24 in. apart 5) cover with soil and water well so that the soil above the bulbs settles, keep soil moist during periods of dry weather but do not overwater
